Biological Controls

A tongue-twister of a name, but it's 5.6% concentration of B.t. var. san Diego is effective against young larvae of the dreaded Colorado potato beetle (CPB). Colorado potato beetles are the biggest problem faced by small-scale potato growers. If left unchecked they can completely destroy a crop. This product is genetically engineered and is quite effective in killing CPB larva in their first and second instar. Each larvae goes through many instars (stages of metamorphosis) before it becomes an adult beetle. Use Rotenone/Pyrethrin or Pyrenone to control older larvae and adults. Use 3 Tbsp. /gal. of water and reapply after rain.

This convenient liquid formulation of B.t. var. Kurstaki has been used by organic growers for years to control caterpillars. It specifically targets lepidopteron larvae and won't harm beneficials. Can be applied up to the day of harvest. Rate of application varies by species, from .5 tsp. to 4 tsp/gal. of water. Read the label carefully to determine the appropriate amount to use. (4,000 I.U./mg)

These floating donut-shaped briquettes slowly release B.t. var. israelensis for effective biocontrol of mosquito and blackfly larvae wherever water accumulates. Each dunk will last at least 30 days and is not affected by alternate wetting and drying. Use one dunk/100 sf in lakes, ponds, birdbaths or rain barrels - any place water collects for more than a week.

Milky Spore - A unique product that controls Japanese Beetles by infecting the larval stage with a virus that is specific to only Japanese Beetles. One application will last 10-20 years. Control can occur in 1-3 years in warmer climates or 3-5 years after application in cooler climates like ours in Massachusetts.
